Can DVD players that play Divx, also play Xvid (avi files)? I was looking at this home theatre system from Samsung (its on a great deal) but it mentions that it plays Divx, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, WMA but nothing on Xvid. Almost all of my movies downloaded from dctorrent are avi format. After I burn them on a CD, I can use the computer to play. The sales rep said it can play but I was not so sure because his answer was not convincing. Anybody here has any advice?? Help appreciated.

My DVD player says it only supports 'DIVX' - nothing about Xvid. But in all honesty it also plays Xvid flawlessly so yeah, you shouldn't have any problem with that home system you want to purchase.

DivX is propriety / commercial codec ie one has to pay royality to Divx owners to support that format..
while xVid is an open source .. thats why you will hardly see any hardware (dvd player) showing its name ... cauz that will be against open source licence... thats why both are spelled reversely XviD <--> DivX and xvid is indirectly developed by developers of divx... But both follow same algorithm to compress video ie chop off info that is redudendant to human eyes... (similar to mp3)... so in short xvid / divx are not lossless .. as video quality is lost after compression.. enough of technical details... but those are relevant to my answer ie 90% of players that support one format supports others too... if in doubt.. why don't you burn a DVD of both xvid coded and divx and take it to the dealer and play in front of you... u should use 'gspot' software to check which is video codec is used to encode video.. don't go with extensions ... avi / mpeg etc etc... as it can be other codecs too... hope it helps... |
