Avg free edition is also a good one to use. I have been using for the past 2 years or so and hasn't found anything wrong with it. Plus it updates everyday.

I don't know why there aren't many takers for Avast AntiVirus.
While AVGfree may be a good standalone virus scanner and remover..
Avast gives so much more ...

Its P2P shield scans while a file is being downloaded from the peers, if the file being downloaded is infected it alerts the user before the same is downloaded completely. This is especially useful when downloading from public trackers like PirateBay where anyone can post malwares.

Its webshield dynamically scans all the links on a particular webpage you are viewing and alerts you if they exist in the blacklist. very much like the McAffee site advisor.

In the Fasttrack to Freewares (feb 2007) by the reputed Digit Magazine they compared AVGfree and Avast and found Avast to be faster.

Though I'm not sure about their utility but Avast also has an Instant Messaging Shield and an Outlook shield.

And final word about updates their is one every\time i switch on my PC.
